Lifestyle Issues

Are you overwhelmed, overworked, overweight, overspent?

Do you frequently use: alcohol, tobacco, medications, shopping, or the internet to cope or escape?

If your life is out of balance and you are unsure of where to turn, then wellness counselling may be the answer to finding a healthier way of life.

There is an overwhelming amount of advice telling you how to be healthier and achieve a healthier life.   Maybe you have tried different self-help books, diets, exercise programs, or pursued a spiritual path to find “the answer” to feeling better about yourself and your life. If you haven’t been able to stick with health goals, or follow through on advice from your physician, then getting support to address your Emotional Health can help you move forward with your health goals.

I help people look at the bigger picture and how modern life may be effecting their emotional health.

  • We have an abundance of food yet, poor nutrition.
  • Many people have sedentary work that leaves them exhausted mentally and feeling too “tired” to exercise.
  • We live in a consumer culture where images of the “perfect life”  are a constant reminder of what your life could and should look like.
  • We live in a culture of high expectations at your job, in your relationships – as a  partner and parent, in your home – nutrition and decor, and in your community.

The increase in rates of depression, anxiety, and addictions are all indications of cumulative stress and unhealthy lifestyles that have come with our modern society.

Lifestyle and Wellness Counselling can help you to feel happier in your day to day life.

  • Learn how to navigate daily stressors of the outside world by understanding your internal world.
  • Achieve emotional health and consistently feel more confident and grounded in dealing with people and situations.
  • Discover a sustainable approach to food and exercise.
  • Learn how to prioritize yourself so you can recharge and have authentic energy for the people you love and things you love to do.
  • Create healthier relationships.

Self-care: Smart not Selfish.

Taking care of yourself and changing habits often falls to the bottom of the to-do list.  When you address the barriers to self-care you will discover that caring for yourself even in small ways leads to a stable sense of well-being. When you care for yourself you have more authentic energy to care for others instead of feeling drained or resentful.

Getting help doesn’t make you weak or inadequate.

Many women feel that they should be able to figure it out on their own. But, knowing what you should do is easier than doing it. Therapy can help you uncover the hidden thoughts and beliefs that are often negative and judgemental, and then become obstacles to self-care and taking positive action in life.

Becoming emotionally healthy will serve you for the rest of your life.

I combine body-oriented psychotherapy and wellness counselling to bring a holistical approach; well-being comes from addressing the needs of mind, body, and spirit.  You can learn to choose the food, types of exercise, and self-care activities that feed your heart and soul.

Food and Body Issues

Are you tired of thinking about food and your body?

There is an overwhelming amount of information on diets and exercise and yet, you struggle to make permanent changes and feel good about your body. Spending your days thinking about calories, carbs, fats and how to burn them off is exhausting. Do you start everyday with the intention to be “good” only to have it unravel in a moment stress when you “treat” yourself, leading to ending the day with feelings of guilt and shame.

Maybe you feel:

  • depressed and hopeless that things will ever change.
  • embarrassed and ashamed that you struggle with food and your body.

Maybe you feel like giving up and tell yourself:

  • you were just born this way.
  • you hate exercise.
  • you love food and are tired of denying yourself.
  • you are too old to change or care how you look.
  • you should focus on making other people (i.e. children, partner) happy and healthy.
  • you don’t deserve to be happy and love your body.

Whether you over-eat or under-eat you know that this struggle takes up too much of your life.  You may believe that it’s normal to be on a diet, and normal to be unhappy with your body.

Is This You?

Problems with Food and Dieting

  • Do you think of food as “good” and “bad”?
  • Are you constantly thinking about food and dieting?
  • Do you try different ways of eating – organic, local, raw, vegan – hoping that this will fix your relationship with food?
  • Do you look to see what others are eating and compare your choices to others?
  • Do you feel guilty when you eat food you enjoy?
  • Do engage in secretive eating or bingeing?

Life can be stressful and if emotional eating is the only way you have of coping. It can become a vicious circle of “treating” yourself, feeling guilt and self-hatred, then back to restrictive eating. Call it numbing, medicating, or stuffing …you know, or suspect, that you use food to deal with your feelings.

Problems with your Body and Self-Image

  • Do you hate your body and feel self-loathing when you look in the mirror?
  • Do you constantly compare your body and shape to others?
  • Do you feel very guilty if you miss workouts or workout despite injuries?
  • Do you feel anxious and depressed about aging.
  • Do think that surgery is your only solution.

Living in a culture that exposes us to thousands of air-brushed images daily sends the message that you are “not good enough”.  It’s impossible not to compare yourself to these pictures, leaving you feeling frustrated and ashamed of your body.

Relationship Problems:

  • you don’t pursue relationships because you don’t feel attractive or good enough.
  • You don’t have close friends and keep people at a distance because you feel ashamed.
  • You don’t enjoy celebrations with family and friends because of the focus on food.
  • You don’t enjoy socializing because you are preoccupied with how you look.
  • You are irritable with your partner and children.
  • You see that your children, especially daughters, are becoming preoccupied with food and their weight.

Relationships, careers, and life goals –  these are essential to feel satisfied and content in ones life. When you are stuck in unhealthy patterns and behaviours you know that these areas suffer.

Ending the Battle with Food and your Body

Whether you have a specific Eating Disorder or want to change unhealthy patterns, it is possible for your life to be radically different.  I know that this is possible because I’ve lived it. Women’s Health Issues

Why focus on women’s health counselling?

Because puberty, pregnancy, peri-menopause, and menopause are times of significant change. Though these are normal and natural they can still be challenging when they bring about unsettling, disruptive, or anxious thoughts and feelings.

Because many women struggle alone when it comes to their thoughts, emotions and feelings about their body, and there may be no one that you can talk to freely without feeling shame or judgement.

Because emotions are often dismissed, minimized or seen as a sign of weakness in some families and cultures. The feelings that are stirred because of hormones, chemistry, and biology are often not accepted and validated in our culture.

Because a women’s physical health and emotional health are connected. Listening to one’s intuition or inner wisdom can be a powerful tool in maintaining health and preventing illness.

Whether you are dealing with a physical issue that is related to hormonal changes or not, acknowledging the connection between the mind and body, or, emotional and physical realm, can be a powerful piece in understanding your body and easing symptoms.

Are you going through a difficult time in dealing with issues related to fertility, pregnancy, peri-menopause or menopause?

Are you dealing with physical symptoms or an illness and need emotional support?

Do you tell yourself?

  • “Be strong lots of other women have dealt with this.”
  • “Don’t complain, people will think you are weak or whining.”
  • “I’m just being silly.”
  • “It’s just hormones.”
  • “Why do women have to go through all this?”

Having worked with women for years, I know how often women “keep it all together” on the outside. Having a place to acknowledge and vent what goes on inside can be an immense relief.

As a therapist, I will provide a safe space to listen without judgement, and help you to discover what you can control in your life when it feels like your body is out of your control. Finding a kinder and more peaceful feeling inside will allow you to:

  • Decrease stress
  • Have more resilience to deal with physical discomfort or pain.
  • Feel more grounded and calm.
  • Be less reactive to people and situations.
  • Have more clarity in your life.

I combine body-oriented psychotherapy and wellness counselling to help you reconnect to your body’s inner voice and knowledge.  I work holistically because a sense of well-being comes from addressing the needs of mind, body, and spirit. Even if you are struggling with a physical issue you can find relief.

Discovering what you need to feel well in your heart can allow healing in all areas of your life.
